I started the Chabot Game Lab at Chabot College in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2022. I had just joined as an engineering professor, and it was important to me that students have an accessible means to learn STEM/STEAM, especially for the minority youth, which makes up most of our community. We have guest speakers from the game industry, and we create 2D, 3D, VR/AR, and tabletop games.
We are sponsored by an HSI Stem Grant in a region of the Bay Area that serves minority students, as our school is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution, and we focus on underserved groups and promote STEAM, especially the idea that STEM education should be accessible. We published our curriculum for all students and those interested in game development to connect with and work with game developers from the industry, our Chabot students, and various dual-enrollment high school and middle school students.
